NEW DELHI — India's Defence Ministry has awarded a 586-crore rupee contract for the supply of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) designed for the nation's T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks, officials confirmed.
The APUs will enable the tanks to fire weapons and operate critical systems even when their primary engines are switched off, providing significant operational advantages during combat scenarios. This capability enhances the tanks' tactical flexibility and reduces fuel consumption during sustained operations.
The procurement contract represents a significant step toward reducing India's dependence on foreign defence suppliers and bolstering domestic manufacturing in the defence sector. The indigenous APU solution is expected to be integrated into the existing fleet of T-72 and T-90 tanks operated by the Indian Army.
Official sources indicated that the contract will strengthen the armed forces' operational readiness while supporting the government's broader 'Make in India' initiative within the defence industry. The APUs are expected to undergo rigorous testing protocols before full-scale deployment across armoured units.
