India has made clear its position that any United Nations-endorsed global mapping initiative must incorporate the nation's official territorial boundaries without compromise. Officials stressed that cartographic standards adopted at the international level cannot sideline India's recognised borders, describing the matter as non-negotiable in diplomatic communications.

The underlying resolution under discussion seeks to promote the adoption of equal-area map projections across international forums and educational institutions. Such projections are designed to preserve the relative sizes of continental landmasses more accurately than traditional Mercator projections, which tend to distort the proportions of land areas, particularly affecting continents in the Southern Hemisphere.
