India-Japan bullet train project gains momentum despite timeline setbacks

India and Japan are set to convene a Foreign and Defence Ministers dialogue by year-end, signalling renewed commitment to their strategic partnership despite challenges facing flagship infrastructure projects. A senior Japanese Foreign Affairs official confirmed the planned talks to The Hindu, underscoring Tokyo's continued investment in deepening ties with New Delhi.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, a cornerstone of India-Japan cooperation, has not met initial Japanese timelines. However, officials indicated the scheme is progressing and remains a priority for both governments despite implementation delays that have drawn scrutiny from Japanese stakeholders.

Beyond the rail corridor, bilateral discussions are expected to address broader regional security concerns. Japan has reiterated its position on maritime law and governance in the South China Sea, where competing territorial claims among multiple nations continue to complicate geopolitical stability in Southeast Asia.
