India launches commemorative coin honouring classical composer Muttuswami Dikshitar

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a special 250-rupee commemorative coin at IIT-BHU in Varanasi on Wednesday to honour the 250th birth anniversary of Muttuswami Dikshitar, one of the pillars of Carnatic classical music.

The event marked a national recognition of the legendary 18th-century composer's profound contributions to Indian classical music traditions. Muttuswami Dikshitar, born in 1776, is celebrated alongside Tyagaraja and Syama Sastri as one of the triumvirate composers who shaped the evolution of Carnatic music.

The commemorative coin, issued by the government, reflects India's practice of honouring cultural icons through numismatic tributes. Such releases typically coincide with significant anniversaries and serve to celebrate the legacies of distinguished figures in arts, literature, and public service.

Varanasi, known as a centre of learning and spiritual significance, provided the venue for the tribute to Dikshitar's enduring musical legacy. The composer's devotional compositions continue to be performed by musicians across India and internationally.
