India liberalizes defence export rules to boost global arms trade

India's defence ministry has streamlined export procedures for weapons and military equipment by broadening the scope of its Open General Export Licence scheme. The OGEL validity period has been extended from two years to three years, reducing the frequency of renewal requirements for exporters.
Under the revised framework, the geographic coverage of the OGEL has been widened to encompass additional countries, though sensitive nations and those subject to United Nations sanctions remain excluded from the scheme. This targeted expansion is designed to facilitate legitimate defence trade with trusted partners while maintaining security safeguards.
The move is expected to ease administrative burdens on Indian defence manufacturers and arms exporters, enabling swifter processing of shipments to authorized destinations.
