India logs over 21,900 digital arrest fraud cases in eight months

The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) and Ministry of Home Affairs filed a comprehensive status report before the Supreme Court detailing the alarming rise in digital arrest fraud cases. Between January 1 and August 31, 2026, authorities registered 21,900 complaints involving financial losses totalling more than ₹647 crore, underscoring the escalating threat posed by the scam.

The Supreme Court had initiated suo motu proceedings on the matter approximately a year ago, recognizing the pressing need for coordinated action against the organized fraud scheme. Digital arrest scams typically involve fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officials or tax authorities through digital platforms, coercing victims into transferring money by threatening arrest or legal action.

The significant volume of complaints and associated financial losses highlight the vulnerability of citizens to cyber fraud and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating the menace. The report's submission reflects ongoing efforts to address the crisis through inter-agency coordination and public awareness initiatives.

The Supreme Court's continued focus on the issue underscores the judiciary's recognition of digital arrest fraud as a matter of national concern requiring sustained attention and comprehensive remedial measures across multiple government departments and law enforcement agencies.
