India maintains dialogue framework as Ganga Waters Treaty nears expiration

India's foreign ministry has underscored the persistence of structured channels for managing the Ganga Waters Sharing Treaty with Bangladesh, addressing concerns about the agreement's imminent expiration. MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that institutional frameworks remain operational to facilitate discussions on the treaty's future, signalling continuity in bilateral water-sharing arrangements despite the approaching deadline.

The 1996 Ganga Waters Sharing Treaty, a landmark agreement governing the distribution of waters from the Ganga river during the dry season, is nearing the end of its current validity period. The treaty has historically been renewed through bilateral negotiations, with both nations prioritising cooperative water management in the shared river system.

Jaiswal confirmed that India has extended an invitation to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit New Delhi, a customary diplomatic engagement for discussing matters of bilateral significance. However, the spokesperson indicated no concrete developments regarding the timing of the proposed visit or substantive progress on treaty renewal negotiations at present.

Water-sharing agreements between India and Bangladesh carry considerable importance for both nations, affecting millions of farmers and communities dependent on the Ganga's flow. Officials from both countries have traditionally engaged through joint committees and bilateral forums to address technical and policy matters related to the treaty's implementation and potential amendments.

The MEA's emphasis on maintaining institutional dialogue suggests India's commitment to resolving the treaty extension through established diplomatic channels, though the absence of announced progress indicates negotiations remain in preliminary stages.
