India mandates BIS certification for smartphone screen protectors from April 2027

The Indian government has notified compulsory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for smartphone screen protectors, requiring all manufacturers and sellers to obtain regulatory approval before offering such products in the domestic market. The mandate, effective from April 1, 2027, falls under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, and mandates conformity with the Indian standard IS 19348:2025.

The notification, issued September 21, designates screen protectors as the 66th item requiring mandatory BIS registration. The expanded list of regulated electronics components now includes smartphones, laptops, mobile chargers, laptop chargers, and screen protectors, bringing a broader range of consumer electronics under quality oversight.

Government officials expect the certification requirement to eliminate low-quality screen protectors from the Indian market, strengthening consumer protection standards. The move is also anticipated to benefit domestic manufacturers, including companies like Optiemus Infracom, which has commenced local production of screen protectors within India.

Manufacturers and importers seeking to sell smartphone screen protectors in India will need to complete the BIS certification process before the April 2027 deadline. The move aligns with the government's broader effort to regulate electronics quality and foster domestic manufacturing capacity in the technology sector.
