India mandates caller name display on all incoming calls from November

Telecommunications regulators in India have issued directives requiring all cellular and fixed-line operators to implement caller name display functionality on all incoming calls from November 1 onwards. The initiative seeks to provide subscribers with immediate identification of callers, thereby reducing instances of fraudulent calls, phishing attempts, and unsolicited marketing communications.

Under the new framework, telecom service providers must ensure that the calling party's name appears on the recipient's handset or device whenever a call is received. The implementation applies to both incoming domestic and international calls, with operators required to maintain comprehensive databases for accurate caller identification.

The regulatory push comes amid rising complaints of telecommunication fraud across India, including impersonation scams, credit card phishing, and financial exploitation targeting vulnerable populations. Consumer advocacy groups have welcomed the measure as a significant step toward empowering users to make informed decisions about accepting calls.

Telecom operators have been granted adequate time to upgrade their infrastructure and integrate the necessary technological systems to support caller name display across their networks. The implementation is expected to enhance transparency in India's telecommunications sector while maintaining compliance with existing data protection and privacy regulations.
