Personal care manufacturers in India will now be required to display vegetarian and non-vegetarian markings on products including soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and other toiletries under newly implemented regulations. The mandate extends existing labeling requirements that have long applied to food products, bringing cosmetics and personal hygiene items under similar consumer transparency standards.

The new rules stipulate that companies must clearly indicate the origin of ingredients used in their formulations. Products derived wholly from plant-based sources will be marked as vegetarian, while those containing animal-derived components—such as glycerin from animal fat, lanolin, or keratin—must be labeled as non-vegetarian. Manufacturers will be responsible for testing and verifying ingredient sourcing before products reach retail shelves.

Industry analysts note the regulations reflect India's diverse consumer base, where a significant proportion of the population follows vegetarian lifestyles for religious, cultural or ethical reasons. The labeling requirement is expected to influence purchasing decisions and may prompt manufacturers to reformulate products or develop vegetarian alternatives to capture market segments that prioritize ingredient transparency.

Compliance timelines and enforcement mechanisms remain under clarification from regulatory authorities. Manufacturers have been advised to review their supply chains and ingredient sourcing practices to ensure alignment with the new standards. Consumer rights groups have welcomed the move as a step toward greater transparency in the personal care sector.
