India is working with Russia and Ukraine to secure grain and fertiliser shipments amid global supply chain disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said. The minister indicated that New Delhi is pursuing a "limited resolution" to address critical shortages of these commodities, which have significant implications for food security and agricultural output across Asia and Africa.
Jaishankar emphasised India's pragmatic approach to the geopolitical tensions, noting that New Delhi is engaging with both sides to find workable solutions on humanitarian and economic grounds. The diplomatic effort reflects India's broader concern about the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on developing economies, which rely heavily on imports of grain and fertiliser products.
The minister also rejected the notion of establishing a global trading system that excludes major economies. He underscored the importance of inclusive international commerce, particularly for nations dependent on stable commodity supplies. India's position reflects its commitment to maintaining balanced relationships with multiple global powers while prioritising the interests of developing nations.
The availability of grain and fertilisers has become increasingly constrained following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with both countries being major suppliers to global markets. India's intermediary role represents its effort to mitigate the humanitarian consequences of the conflict while maintaining its strategic autonomy in foreign policy.
