India and Mercosur have taken steps to deepen their economic engagement, with both sides agreeing to ease documentary requirements for trade while launching formal talks on broadening their existing preferential trade agreement (PTA).
The announcement came following a meeting between Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin on Monday. The streamlined certificate-of-origin process is expected to reduce compliance burdens for exporters and importers operating between India and the four-nation bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
The decision to initiate expansion negotiations marks a significant step in bilateral trade relations. Officials indicated the talks would explore opportunities to enhance market access across key sectors and strengthen the commercial framework between India and Mercosur members.
The moves reflect growing efforts by New Delhi to diversify its trading partnerships and strengthen ties with emerging economies. Mercosur, representing combined GDP of over $2.8 trillion, represents a significant market for Indian goods and services, while the bloc seeks Indian technology and manufacturing capacity.
Both sides are expected to hold detailed discussions in the coming months to identify priority areas for the PTA expansion, with the simplified trade procedures serving as an interim measure to facilitate commerce.
