India moves to crack down on nicotine pouches over health concerns

India's health authorities have initiated enforcement measures against nicotine pouches, responding to escalating concerns about the unmonitored products' proliferation across the country. The move follows a comprehensive federal study that identified the pouches as posing significant public health risks due to their minimal regulatory oversight.

The nicotine pouches, which are placed between the gum and lip for nicotine absorption, have gained traction particularly among younger consumers in India. Unlike traditional tobacco products, these pouches often escape existing regulatory frameworks, creating a gap in consumer protection and health monitoring.

A June federal health assessment concluded that nicotine pouches represent a largely unregulated public health concern, prompting the government to take action. The crackdown aims to address the lack of standardised safety protocols, labelling requirements, and age verification mechanisms surrounding their sale and distribution.

Regulatory authorities have begun issuing directives to retailers and online platforms to cease sales of non-compliant products. The enforcement action reflects India's broader efforts to strengthen tobacco and nicotine product regulation amid evolving consumption patterns in the region.
