India must attract youth uninterested in politics to public service: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday emphasised the need to broaden recruitment into India's public services, particularly among youth who have not been conventionally attracted to government roles. Addressing attendees at the Union Public Service Commission's (UPSC) centenary celebrations, Modi highlighted the importance of diversifying the pool of candidates entering India's civil services.

The Prime Minister stressed that India's administrative machinery must evolve to include talented individuals from varied backgrounds and motivations, moving beyond traditional patterns of public service recruitment. His remarks underscored a broader vision for modernising India's bureaucratic structures to reflect contemporary aspirations and skill sets.

Marking the occasion, Modi released three significant publications commemorating the UPSC's 100-year legacy. These included a commemorative coin, a postage stamp, and a book titled '100 Landmark Judgements: Shaping the Policies of UPSC and Public Service Commissions in India'. The publications highlight pivotal judicial decisions that have shaped the evolution of India's public service framework over the past century.

The centenary celebration underscores the UPSC's continued role as a cornerstone institution in India's administrative structure, responsible for recruiting civil servants across the Union and state services. The event provided a platform to reflect on the commission's historical contributions while addressing contemporary challenges in public sector recruitment and governance.
