India must develop robust internal capabilities across electronics and semiconductor manufacturing to insulate itself from potential technology denials, according to IT Secretary S Krishnan. The official stressed that building such domestic strength is essential as New Delhi seeks to carve out a significant role in worldwide electronics and semiconductor value chains.
Krishnan's remarks underline government concerns about India's reliance on external sources for critical technologies, particularly amid geopolitical tensions and supply chain vulnerabilities exposed by recent global disruptions. The push reflects New Delhi's broader strategy to reduce dependence on imports for technology-intensive sectors.
India has in recent years launched several initiatives to boost semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme designed to attract both domestic and foreign manufacturers. The government views these sectors as strategic priorities for economic growth and technological sovereignty.
Strengthening India's position in global electronics and semiconductor networks would also create significant employment opportunities and contribute to the country's manufacturing ambitions, officials have noted. The IT Secretary's emphasis on building domestic clout suggests New Delhi intends to pursue more aggressive policies in these sectors going forward.
