India faces a critical window to establish robust technology capabilities and cannot afford to waste time in doing so, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Information Technology, and Communications.

Addressing delegates at the 2026 Bloomberg New Economy Forum, Vaishnaw highlighted the urgency of India's technological self-reliance amid global geopolitical shifts and supply chain vulnerabilities. He stressed that building a resilient semiconductor ecosystem requires immediate and sustained action across multiple sectors.

Trust emerged as a cornerstone of Vaishnaw's vision for India's semiconductor value chain. The minister emphasised that fostering trust among stakeholders—from government institutions to private manufacturers and international partners—would be essential to attracting investment and ensuring the stability required for long-term growth in this critical sector.

The comments reflect India's broader push to reduce dependence on foreign technology and position itself as a key player in global semiconductor manufacturing. Recent government initiatives have aimed to attract chip makers to establish production facilities within the country, signalling New Delhi's commitment to bridging the technology gap.

Vaishnaw's remarks underscore the government's conviction that technological advancement is not merely an economic imperative but a strategic necessity for India's development trajectory in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
