India needs dedicated green finance institution, says CII taskforce

The CII taskforce has identified the creation of a specialized green finance institution as critical to meeting India's environmental and sustainability objectives. Such an entity would serve as a dedicated conduit for capital directed towards renewable energy, climate adaptation, and other green infrastructure projects across the country.

According to the taskforce report, the proposed institution could catalyse investments totalling approximately one trillion dollars over a five to ten-year period. This scale of financing would be instrumental in accelerating India's transition towards a more sustainable economy and meeting its long-term climate commitments.

The taskforce findings suggest that existing financial mechanisms have fallen short in mobilizing sufficient capital for green projects at the pace required. A dedicated institution with specialized expertise and tailored financing instruments could address current gaps in the green finance ecosystem.

The proposal comes as India seeks to balance rapid economic development with environmental stewardship. Enhanced green financing infrastructure is seen as essential to supporting the country's renewable energy expansion, energy efficiency initiatives, and climate resilience programmes. The CII taskforce has submitted its recommendations for consideration by relevant government agencies and financial sector stakeholders.
