The bilateral free trade agreement, negotiated over several years, marks a significant expansion of economic ties between the two nations. The pact eliminates tariffs on a broad range of Indian goods entering New Zealand, providing Indian exporters enhanced market access in sectors including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products.
A key provision of the agreement establishes two new Temporary Employment Entry visa categories specifically for Indian nationals seeking to work in New Zealand. These categories are designed to facilitate labour mobility and address skill shortages in the New Zealand economy, while providing Indian professionals expanded opportunities for temporary employment abroad.
The agreement covers trade in goods and services, with provisions addressing regulatory harmonisation and investment frameworks. Indian services providers, particularly in information technology and professional services, are expected to benefit from reduced trade barriers and streamlined procedures under the pact.
Both countries have indicated the FTA represents a foundation for deepening bilateral engagement. The agreement is anticipated to boost two-way trade, generate employment opportunities, and strengthen people-to-people connections between India and New Zealand in coming years.
