India offers military hardware to strengthen ASEAN defence ties

India is intensifying its defence engagement with ASEAN member states through concrete offers of military equipment and technology cooperation, according to statements by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The defence minister has put forward proposals to supply radar systems and air defence capabilities to Southeast Asian nations, marking a significant expansion of India's military partnerships in the region.

The initiative reflects New Delhi's broader strategic ambitions in the Indo-Pacific, where India seeks to position itself as a stabilising force and reliable security partner. Singh emphasised that India's approach centres on creating an environment where all regional countries can exercise sovereign decision-making, safeguard their national interests, and achieve economic progress without external coercion or interference.

The offer of defence systems is part of India's Act East policy and its commitment to the Quad alliance framework, which aims to ensure freedom of navigation and adherence to international law in shared maritime spaces. By providing modern military equipment, India aims to enhance the defensive capabilities of ASEAN nations and foster interoperability among regional defence forces.

India's defence engagement with ASEAN comes amid growing strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region. New Delhi has positioned itself as a counterweight to expanding military influence in Southeast Asia, emphasising partnership based on mutual respect and shared democratic values rather than coercive practices.
