The Ministry of Home Affairs has completed the standardisation of names for 28 geographical features scattered across Ladakh, according to official records. The designated features span a diverse range of natural landmarks, encompassing mountain peaks, valleys, glaciers, water bodies and river systems across the region.

The nomenclature standardisation process involves formally documenting and establishing official names for geographical features that may have previously lacked consistent or widely recognised designations. Such exercises are typically undertaken to ensure administrative clarity, facilitate mapping initiatives and provide a unified reference framework for geographical locations across regions.

Ladakh, which became a separate union territory in 2019, has been the subject of several administrative and institutional reorganisation efforts. The standardisation of geographical nomenclature forms part of the broader administrative consolidation in the region, ensuring uniformity in official records and documentation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs oversees geographical naming conventions and maintains the official register of place names across India. Such standardisation exercises are periodically conducted across different states and union territories to maintain consistency in geographical records and support administrative, cartographic and developmental activities.
