India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has indicated that the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina could be facilitated through a 'well-structured' legal process, signalling New Delhi's openness to formal proceedings on the matter.
Trivedi's remarks come as Bangladesh seeks the return of Hasina, who fled to India following the fall of her government. The High Commissioner acknowledged that India "had hardly any choice" when Hasina sought refuge, suggesting the decision to provide sanctuary was made under pressing circumstances.
The envoy's statement indicates that while India granted Hasina asylum, the government remains willing to engage with Bangladesh through proper bilateral and legal channels regarding her status. An extradition process would typically involve formal requests channelled through established diplomatic and judicial protocols between the two nations.
Hasina's departure marked a significant political upheaval in Bangladesh, and her status in India has remained a sensitive issue between the neighbouring countries. Trivedi's comments suggest that any resolution would require structured legal procedures rather than ad-hoc arrangements, highlighting the complexity of balancing humanitarian considerations with interstate obligations.
