India Opens ₹472-Crore Tank Overhaul Facility to Modernise Fleet

India has commissioned a ₹472-crore tank overhaul facility in Jabalpur designed to enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Army's armoured vehicle fleet. The facility represents a significant step toward sustaining the country's fleet of T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks through comprehensive maintenance, repair, and upgrade programmes conducted within Indian borders.

The overhaul complex will enable the Army to conduct periodic servicing, component replacement, and modernisation of its tank fleet without dependence on external contractors or foreign expertise. Defence officials view the facility as critical infrastructure for maintaining combat effectiveness while supporting the government's broader indigenisation push in defence manufacturing and maintenance.

The Jabalpur facility joins a growing network of domestic defence capabilities aimed at reducing India's reliance on imports for military platform sustainment. By establishing in-house expertise and infrastructure for tank overhaul, the facility is expected to improve the lifespan and operational availability of the Army's heavy armour assets while generating technical expertise within the domestic defence industrial base.
