India overhauls Agnipath scheme with extended tenure, enhanced compensation

India's defence ministry has announced significant revisions to the Agnipath scheme, the short-service recruitment initiative launched in 2022. Under the restructured framework, approximately 75 per cent of Agniveers—recruits who complete their initial terms—will now have access to an extended two-year service period, enhancing career prospects within the armed forces.

The revised scheme increases compensation packages for participants, addressing earlier concerns about remuneration levels. Officials indicated that enhanced pay structures would make military service more attractive to prospective recruits across the country. The modifications apply uniformly across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

A critical component of the overhaul concerns post-service opportunities. Agniveers completing their extended tenure will now have improved eligibility criteria and selection processes to transition into permanent armed forces positions, subject to performance evaluations and organisational requirements.

The government's decision follows feedback from recruitment stakeholders and prospective candidates regarding the original scheme's structure. The revisions maintain the core objective of building a younger, more agile military workforce while providing enhanced career continuity and financial security for participants who demonstrate aptitude and commitment.
