India, Philippines in advanced talks on expanded BrahMos missile deal

India and the Philippines are in advanced stages of discussion to broaden the existing BrahMos missile procurement agreement, according to defence sources familiar with the negotiations. The expanded package would represent a substantial increase in Manila's anti-ship and land-attack capabilities in Southeast Asia's contested waters.

Under the proposed arrangement, the Philippine military is expected to acquire approximately five complete BrahMos systems, which would collectively comprise nearly 60 missiles. The transaction, if finalized, would be valued between $700 million and $800 million, making it one of the region's significant defence procurement initiatives in recent years.

The BrahMos system, a joint production venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia, has emerged as a preferred choice for several regional nations seeking advanced missile capabilities. The Philippines' interest in expanding its existing procurement reflects growing defence modernization efforts as countries in the region contend with evolving security challenges.

Both governments have previously collaborated on defence matters, and the ongoing negotiations are expected to conclude in the coming months, according to officials tracking the discussions. The deal would further strengthen bilateral defence ties between New Delhi and Manila while contributing to regional stability through conventional deterrence capabilities.
