India plans integrated school-to-employment pathway for students

India's labour and education ministries are collaborating on a comprehensive framework to bridge the gap between classroom learning and employment opportunities, according to government plans under review.

The proposed system would integrate three critical databases: student academic records, the e-Shram portal tracking informal workers, and employment platforms tracking job placements and opportunities. Officials envision this interconnected infrastructure enabling real-time matching of student skills with available positions across sectors.

Beyond database integration, the initiative includes provisions for structured career counselling within schools, aiming to equip students with guidance on viable career paths aligned with labour market demands. This counselling component would help students make informed decisions about skill development during their final school years.

The move addresses longstanding concerns about India's school-to-work transition, where many graduates struggle to identify suitable employment pathways or lack awareness of available opportunities. By creating a unified digital infrastructure, policymakers hope to reduce the gap between job-seeker aspirations and employer requirements.

Implementation is expected to require coordination across multiple departments and state governments, with officials currently working on technical specifications and data-sharing protocols to ensure smooth integration across systems.
