India poised to add 8 GW wind capacity in FY27, officials confirm

India's wind energy sector is experiencing accelerated growth, with authorities projecting capacity additions of 7.5-8 GW during fiscal year 2026-27, according to a senior Ministry of New & Renewable Energy official. Rajesh Kulhari, Joint Secretary at MNRE, outlined India's expanding wind portfolio while addressing the EU-India Wind Energy Business Summit 2026 in Hamburg, noting that the previous fiscal year saw over 6 GW of new capacity commissioned across the country.

The nation has already installed 2.42 GW of wind capacity in the first five months of the current fiscal year, demonstrating the consistent pace of deployment needed to meet long-term objectives. India's total installed wind generation capacity reached 58.52 GW as of August 31, 2026, positioning the sector as a cornerstone of the country's renewable energy expansion strategy.

These capacity additions are crucial to India's larger renewable energy ambitions, particularly its goal to achieve over 100 GW of wind capacity by 2030. The trajectory also supports India's overarching target of generating 500 GW from renewable sources, a commitment that underpins the nation's energy security and climate action plans.

Kulhari reaffirmed India's commitment to strengthening international collaboration in the renewable energy space, pledging full cooperation with the European Union on joint initiatives and technology sharing in the sector.
