India poised to lead AI adoption and scaling in coming decade

India is well-positioned to emerge as a leader in artificial intelligence adoption and deployment across Asia over the coming decade, driven by indigenous AI capabilities and a strengthening technical ecosystem, according to Pratyush Kumar, cofounder of Sarvam AI.

Kumar cited several factors underpinning India's potential to scale AI applications rapidly, including the development of domestically-created AI models, improved access to graphics processing units required for AI computation, and a burgeoning pool of skilled technology professionals. The convergence of these elements creates favourable conditions for accelerated AI integration across sectors, he said.

Financial services are expected to serve as a primary driver of AI adoption in India, with banks and fintech companies increasingly deploying machine learning and AI systems to enhance operations, reduce costs, and improve customer experiences. The sector's digital maturity and competitive pressures position it as a natural early adopter of advanced AI technologies.

India's growing AI capability stands in contrast to earlier dependence on foreign AI platforms and models. The emergence of homegrown solutions reflects increased investment in research and development, alongside government initiatives supporting artificial intelligence innovation and infrastructure development across the country.
