India's air defence modernisation programme is advancing with the expected arrival of its fifth S-400 air defence system from Russia in early 2027, according to defence procurement timelines. The fourth system was operationalised following its receipt in May-June 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country's ongoing induction of the long-range air defence platform.
The S-400 Triumf system represents a cornerstone of India's multi-tiered air defence strategy, capable of engaging aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at extended ranges. The successive inductions reflect New Delhi's commitment to modernising its air defence posture amid evolving regional security dynamics.
Beyond the S-400 programme, Indian defence authorities are concurrently evaluating the Pantsir short-range air defence system, also manufactured by Russia. The evaluation process forms part of a broader assessment to identify complementary systems that would enhance overall air defence integration and coverage at lower altitudes.
These acquisitions underscore India's reliance on Russian defence partnerships for critical capability development, while the country continues to balance its procurement strategy across multiple platforms and international suppliers to ensure operational redundancy and technological diversity in its armed forces.
