India positions itself as trusted global semiconductor manufacturing hub

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday declared India's readiness to serve as a trusted hub for global semiconductor manufacturing, citing growing opportunities in the sector and government commitment to enabling growth. Speaking at the inauguration of SEMICON India 2026, Modi noted that the world requires new, reliable locations for chip production beyond traditional centers, positioning India as well-suited to meet this demand.

The government is implementing comprehensive measures to attract semiconductor manufacturers, including supportive policies and regulatory frameworks designed to facilitate business operations. Modi emphasized that India's semiconductor ecosystem is expanding rapidly, creating openings for innovation, investment, and economic growth across the sector.

India has already approved 12 chip-making projects, with expectations that approvals will accelerate in coming phases. The government has significantly expanded its commitment to the industry through India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, which increased funding from USD 8 billion to USD 13.5 billion, demonstrating the priority placed on developing domestic semiconductor capabilities.

The expanded outlay reflects New Delhi's determination to remove barriers and provide manufacturers with necessary policy support to establish and scale operations in India. Officials indicated that additional infrastructure, regulatory adjustments, and incentives would continue rolling out to strengthen the nation's position as a competitive semiconductor manufacturing destination.
