India pursues expanded BrahMos missile exports to Philippines

India is in final-stage talks to broaden its military cooperation with the Philippines through an expanded BrahMos missile programme, sources with knowledge of the negotiations said on Wednesday. The discussions centre on increasing the quantity and scope of the cruise missile system that Manila has already acquired from New Delhi.

The BrahMos, a supersonic cruise missile developed jointly by India and Russia, ranks among the fastest of its kind in global inventories. The weapon system has become a key component of India's defence exports strategy in Southeast Asia, where regional tensions over maritime claims and strategic competition have heightened demand for advanced military capabilities.

The Philippines, which has faced increasing pressure over disputed territorial waters in the South China Sea, has previously expressed interest in bolstering its naval and air defence systems. An expanded BrahMos purchase would strengthen Manila's maritime security posture and deepen defence ties with New Delhi at a time when several Southeast Asian nations are diversifying their military procurement sources.

Details of the proposed expansion, including the number of missiles and delivery timelines, remain under negotiation between the two governments. Neither India nor the Philippines has officially confirmed the talks, though defence cooperation between the two nations has accelerated in recent years through joint exercises and technology-sharing arrangements.
