India pursuing FTAs with 8-9 more blocs to boost global trade share

India is accelerating its push into global trade architecture through simultaneous negotiations with eight to nine additional economic blocs and trading partners, according to statements from the Commerce Ministry. The move reflects New Delhi's ambition to position itself as a reliable participant in international commerce and manufacturing networks.

Once concluded, the slate of free trade agreements is projected to encompass roughly three-quarters of total global trade. This expansive coverage would significantly enhance India's integration into cross-border supply chains and create new opportunities for Indian exporters across sectors.

The negotiations underscore India's strategic shift toward deepening economic ties with key markets and regional groupings. By securing preferential market access through bilateral and multilateral trade deals, India seeks to leverage its demographic advantages and manufacturing capacity to compete more effectively on the world stage.

These efforts complement India's existing free trade framework while signalling a willingness to engage constructively with multiple economic blocs simultaneously. The approach aims to insulate India from over-dependence on any single trading partner while establishing the country as an attractive destination for multinational investment and production.
