India pushes beyond assembly to build electronics component ecosystem

India's electronics manufacturing sector has traditionally concentrated on assembly operations, with companies importing critical components from abroad. A fresh policy push aims to reverse this pattern by fostering domestic production of semiconductors, electronic components, materials and manufacturing equipment—areas where India remains heavily dependent on foreign suppliers.

The Electronics Components Manufacturing Services (ECMS) scheme represents a key part of this strategy. Backed by government incentives and production-linked schemes, ECMS seeks to attract both domestic and international manufacturers to establish supply chains within India. Success would reduce import dependency, create local employment and position Indian companies within global electronics supply networks.

Industry observers note that building a competitive components sector requires sustained investment in research, infrastructure and skilled workforce development. Existing initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive scheme have demonstrated some success in attracting assembly operations, but upstream component manufacturing poses greater technical and capital challenges.

Whether India can establish a globally competitive supplier base depends on policy consistency, adequate funding and coordination between government agencies and industry stakeholders. Several multinational electronics companies have expressed interest in expanding operations in India, though detailed implementation of incentive schemes remains critical to converting interest into actual investment and manufacturing capability.
