India pushes BRICS agenda on local currency trade settlements

India is steering BRICS negotiations toward greater use of local currencies in trade and investment transactions among member nations, reflecting New Delhi's broader push to reduce dependence on Western-dominated payment infrastructure.

DEA Secretary Anuradha Thakur indicated that ongoing BRICS discussions encompass two key objectives: establishing interoperability between different payment and messaging channels across member states, and facilitating settlements conducted in local currencies rather than traditional reserve currencies.

The initiative aligns with India's economic agenda of strengthening intra-BRICS trade relationships while building alternative financial mechanisms. By enabling seamless transactions in rupees, yuan, roubles, and other local currencies, member nations aim to enhance trade efficiency and reduce transaction costs associated with currency conversions.

These discussions represent part of BRICS' broader effort to develop parallel financial infrastructure independent of existing Western-dominated systems. The push for payment system interoperability and local currency usage has gained momentum as member states seek to deepen economic integration within the bloc.

India's active role in championing these initiatives underscores New Delhi's commitment to leveraging BRICS as a platform for advancing its economic interests in the Global South while positioning itself as a bridge between developed and developing economies.
