India pushes Brics to amplify voice in global tax policy talks

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged the Brics bloc to wield greater influence in shaping global tax policy, signalling India's commitment to deepening cooperation among the five major emerging economies on revenue matters.

Addressing the issue at recent discussions, Sitharaman highlighted India's proposal to establish working groups focused on international taxation and transfer pricing. These initiatives are designed to enable closer coordination between the tax administrations of Brics nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The finance minister also advocated for enhanced information sharing on revenue statistics among member countries, aiming to create a more unified approach to taxation challenges. The proposals reflect India's broader push to ensure emerging markets have a stronger say in international economic forums traditionally dominated by developed nations.

By establishing dedicated platforms for dialogue and data exchange, India hopes to help Brics countries develop coordinated positions on issues such as digital taxation and base erosion, allowing them to negotiate from a position of greater collective strength in global forums.
