India raises EPFO wage ceiling to ₹25,000, expanding worker coverage
The government has increased the Employee Provident Fund Organisation's wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, bringing over 51 lakh additional workers under mandatory social security coverage.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has announced a significant expansion of the Employees' Provident Fund scheme by raising the monthly wage ceiling to ₹25,000, a substantial increase from the previous limit of ₹15,000. The move aims to strengthen the social security net for India's expanding workforce and ensure greater financial protection for workers across income brackets.
With this adjustment, more than 51 lakh additional employees become eligible for mandatory EPFO coverage, substantially widening the scheme's reach across the country. The higher ceiling will enable workers earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 monthly to avail themselves of the retirement and disability benefits provided under the provident fund system.
The EPFO, which manages contributions from both employers and employees, has been a cornerstone of India's social security framework for organized sector workers. The wage ceiling revision reflects the government's commitment to extending protection to a larger segment of the workforce amid changing employment patterns and wage structures across various sectors.
The implementation of the revised ceiling is expected to strengthen long-term financial security for millions of workers while encouraging greater participation in formal employment schemes. The move also addresses concerns about ensuring adequate retirement provisions for workers in the lower-to-middle income bracket.
