India Rebuffs UN Criticism Over Delhi Detentions as Unwarranted

New Delhi has dismissed concerns raised by the UN's human rights office regarding detentions in the capital, characterizing the remarks as misplaced interference. India's UN mission called on the international body to redirect its focus to what it termed larger-scale protest-related issues.

India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations issued a sharp response to observations made by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) regarding detention practices in Delhi, asserting that the UN body had overstepped its mandate.

In a statement posted on its official social media account, the Indian mission rejected the characterization of the detentions, arguing that the OHCHR's concerns lacked factual grounding and represented unwarranted interference in India's internal affairs.

The mission suggested that rather than focusing on Delhi's actions, the UN human rights office should concentrate its efforts on addressing what it described as widespread protest movements and related concerns in other regions. The statement underscored New Delhi's position that India's domestic law enforcement matters should not be subject to external scrutiny based on what it termed incomplete information.

The exchange reflects ongoing tensions between India and certain UN bodies over human rights issues. New Delhi has previously contested international criticism of its security and detention policies, maintaining that such matters fall within India's sovereign purview and are governed by domestic legal frameworks.
