India receives 70,500+ corruption complaints against government in 2025
The Central Vigilance Commission reported over 70,500 corruption complaints filed against government departments in 2025, with banking and railway sectors emerging as the most problematic areas. Despite disposing of nearly 92 percent of complaints, thousands remain pending investigation.

India's anti-corruption watchdog received 70,584 complaints of misconduct across government bodies during 2025, according to the Central Vigilance Commission's annual report released this week. Chief vigilance officers, who function as the Commission's investigative arm across departments, disposed of 64,905 cases by year-end, leaving 5,679 still under process.
The banking sector topped the list of problem areas, with chief vigilance officers receiving 9,933 complaints—the highest among all government bodies. Of these, 9,520 were resolved, though 413 remained pending, including 52 cases exceeding the standard three-month investigation timeline. Indian Railways followed closely with 9,381 complaints filed, of which 8,754 were disposed of.
The Commission noted that 2,002 complaints remained unresolved beyond the prescribed three-month investigation period, raising concerns about processing delays. The CVC conducts periodic reviews of pending cases to accelerate their disposal and ensure departmental compliance with investigation timelines. Officials have emphasised the importance of expeditious handling to maintain public trust in government institutions.
