India records over 70,000 graft complaints against government in 2025

India's anti-corruption machinery received 70,584 complaints of graft against government departments during 2025, according to vigilance data released at year-end. The banking and railway sectors emerged as the primary sources of allegations, underscoring persistent concerns about transparency and accountability in these critical infrastructure and financial services domains.

Chief Vigilance Officers, who function as the operational arm of India's anti-corruption framework, processed the flood of complaints at a steady pace. By December 31, 2025, approximately 64,905 cases had been disposed of, representing a clearance rate of around 92 percent.

The high volume of complaints reflects heightened public awareness of anti-corruption mechanisms and the willingness of citizens and internal whistleblowers to report suspected misconduct. Banking sector vulnerabilities, ranging from loan disbursement irregularities to financial mismanagement, have long remained a focal point for vigilance authorities. Railways, similarly, continue to face scrutiny over procurement practices, service delivery, and administrative decisions affecting public resources.

The resolution of nearly two-thirds of complaints within the calendar year indicates improved efficiency in the vigilance system, though a substantial backlog of unresolved cases persists. These figures underscore ongoing challenges in combating corruption within government institutions and the sustained demand for institutional reforms across sectors.
