India Rejects Pakistan's UN Claims Over Indus Waters Treaty

India has formally objected to Pakistan's approach on the Indus Waters Treaty dispute, rejecting claims made in a recent communication to the United Nations Security Council. The Ministry of External Affairs said Pakistan has distorted facts in its presentation and that India does not recognize the authority of the Court of Arbitration invoked by Islamabad in the matter.

The dispute centers on interpretation and implementation of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a bilateral agreement that governs the sharing of waters from the Indus River system. Pakistan has previously sought international intervention through UN channels, a move India views as an attempt to internationalize a bilateral issue.

New Delhi's position underscores the deep disagreement between the two nations over how water-sharing disputes under the treaty should be resolved. India maintains that existing bilateral mechanisms are the appropriate forum for addressing such concerns and has consistently opposed attempts to involve multilateral bodies in what it considers a matter of direct bilateral negotiation.

The Indus Waters Treaty has been one of the most enduring international agreements between the two countries, but recent years have seen increasing tensions over dam projects and water allocation. Both nations continue to prioritize their respective water security interests while maintaining formally that the treaty remains operative.
