India's envoy has responded firmly to criticism from US Representative Pramila Jayapal regarding the Supplementary Voters List (SVL) process, asserting that electoral matters fall within New Delhi's domestic purview and are not subject to external commentary.
Jayapal had expressed concern over reports that millions of names were allegedly removed from voter rolls during the SVL process. Her remarks prompted a sharp reaction from the Indian side, with Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra rejecting what he characterized as interference in India's internal affairs.
Quatri emphasized India's credentials as a vibrant democracy with independent electoral institutions. He highlighted that the country's Election Commission operates with full autonomy and has established mechanisms to ensure electoral integrity and voter protection.
The exchange reflects growing tensions over international scrutiny of India's electoral processes. New Delhi has consistently maintained that its electoral management systems are robust and transparent, and that suggestions of irregularities undermine both India's democratic credentials and the sovereignty of its institutions.
