India relaxes defence export rules to boost sector competitiveness
The Defence Ministry has streamlined export procedures, allowing manufacturers to self-authorise multiple shipments under a single licence valid for two years, eliminating the need for batch-by-batch approvals.

India's defence export regime has been simplified to reduce bureaucratic delays and enhance the sector's operational efficiency. Under the new framework, authorised exporters can now generate a one-time authorisation covering multiple consignments, removing the requirement to seek fresh approval for each individual shipment.
The relaxation of norms is expected to accelerate delivery timelines and reduce administrative burden on defence manufacturers and exporters. Previously, the process of obtaining separate approvals for each batch of exports created operational constraints and extended project completion periods.
Licence validity has been extended to two years under the revised regulations, providing exporters greater flexibility in planning and executing their international contracts. The extended period allows manufacturers to better manage supply chains and coordinate with overseas buyers without frequent regulatory interventions.
The measure aligns with the government's broader push to strengthen India's defence manufacturing ecosystem and increase the country's share in global arms markets. Industry observers view the step as a significant move to make Indian defence exporters more competitive internationally while maintaining robust security oversight mechanisms.
