India rolls out caller name display feature to combat fraud from November 1

India's telecom regulator is set to launch Caller Name Presentation (CNAP), a technology that automatically displays the identity of incoming callers on mobile phones beginning November 1. The new protocol represents a significant step toward enhancing user security and reducing the risk of phone-based fraud and scams across the country.

Under the CNAP framework, smartphone users will see the caller's name appear on their screen along with the phone number for all incoming calls. Telecom service providers will be responsible for cross-referencing incoming numbers with registered subscriber databases to populate caller information in real time.

The initiative addresses mounting concerns about phone fraud in India, where cybercriminals frequently use spoofed or unknown numbers to deceive victims into sharing personal and financial information. By providing immediate caller identification, the system empowers users to make informed decisions about whether to answer calls, effectively reducing exposure to common scam tactics.

The implementation follows recommendations from India's Telecom Regulatory Authority to enhance consumer protection. Service providers have been given sufficient advance notice to integrate the necessary infrastructure and databases required to support the new calling standard across their networks.

Experts say the rollout represents a proactive approach to combating digital fraud, though success will depend on the accuracy of telecom databases and consistent implementation across all major carriers operating in India's competitive telecommunications market.
