India rolls out caller name display service across all mobile networks

India's major telecom operators—Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL—will implement the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service starting November 1, marking a significant step in consumer protection against fraud.

The service will automatically display the caller's name on recipients' phones, enabling subscribers to verify the identity of incoming calls from unknown numbers. This feature is particularly aimed at combating cyber fraud, which has seen a sharp rise in recent years as scammers increasingly target unsuspecting citizens through impersonation and deceptive calling tactics.

The Department of Telecom has mandated the rollout across all major telecom service providers to create a unified caller identification system. By providing real-time name verification, the CNAP system is expected to significantly reduce the effectiveness of scam calls, as fraudsters often rely on anonymity to deceive their targets.

Industry analysts expect the service to benefit millions of Indians currently vulnerable to cyber fraud. Consumer advocacy groups have welcomed the measure as an overdue safeguard, noting that caller name display systems have proven effective in reducing fraud incidents in other countries.

The implementation represents one of the government's largest initiatives to strengthen consumer protection in the telecommunications sector, with telecom operators required to integrate the system into their existing call handling infrastructure.
