Indo-Russian Rifles Limited has achieved a significant milestone in India's defence manufacturing sector by producing the first AK-203 rifle with 100 percent indigenous components. The prototype has undergone successful test-firing, marking a critical step towards reducing the country's dependence on imported defence equipment.
The AK-203, colloquially referred to as 'Sher' (Tiger), represents a collaborative effort between India and Russia to develop an assault rifle suited to the Indian Army's operational requirements. The shift to entirely domestic components demonstrates the company's commitment to enhancing India's self-reliance in small arms manufacturing.
The Indian Army is scheduled to conduct formal trials of the indigenously-produced rifle next month, a crucial evaluation phase that will determine its suitability for wider procurement and deployment. Success in these trials would represent a significant boost to India's Make in India initiative within the defence sector.
The development of the rifle with fully indigenous components is expected to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce long-term operational costs for the armed forces. It also underscores India's growing capability in advanced small arms manufacturing and defence technology integration.
