India's automotive retail sector reached a new peak in August with total sales hitting 2.42 million units, representing an 18 percent increase from the corresponding month last year, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The passenger vehicle segment was a standout performer, crossing the 400,000-unit threshold for the first time in a single month. This milestone underscores sustained consumer demand across the country's vehicle markets and reflects growing purchasing power in both urban and semi-urban regions.
A significant trend emerged in the fuel mix of passenger vehicles, with combined sales of CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles surpassing petrol for the first time. This shift signals a major transition in consumer preferences, driven by rising fuel costs, environmental consciousness, and improved availability of alternative fuel models from manufacturers.
The robust August performance comes amid a broader recovery in the Indian automobile sector following pandemic-related disruptions. Industry analysts attribute the growth to pent-up demand, improved credit availability, and expansion of vehicle offerings across price segments, suggesting momentum may continue in coming months.
