India's automakers seek delayed rollout of stricter BS-VII brake, tyre rules

India's automotive manufacturers have collectively urged the Centre to defer the enforcement of BS-VII brake and tyre emission norms, requesting a timeline extension to 2035 to allow the industry adequate preparation time. The industry representatives have highlighted that the premature implementation of these stricter standards could strain component suppliers who lack the technological readiness to meet the new specifications.

The automakers have linked their concerns to three critical factors: the availability and capacity of domestic brake and tyre suppliers to meet enhanced emission reduction requirements, the need for finalisation of specific emission limits under the new standards, and the establishment of standardised testing methodologies that manufacturers can reliably adopt.

The BS-VII regulations represent a significant tightening of pollution controls compared to the current BS-VI framework. The industry's appeal suggests that meeting these enhanced requirements within an accelerated timeline could pose operational challenges and increase production costs substantially.

The Centre has been reviewing automotive emission standards as part of its broader environmental commitments. The government's response to the industry's deferment request will determine whether the new brake and tyre norms proceed as originally scheduled or face delays. Industry stakeholders maintain that a phased implementation approach, supported by supplier development initiatives, would enable smoother compliance without disrupting the sector's growth trajectory.
