India's Ayush sector poised to hit $318 billion by 2047, study shows
India's traditional medicine and wellness sector is emerging as one of the country's fastest-growing service segments, with current economic contributions valued at nearly $37 billion and projected to expand dramatically over the next two decades, according to new research.

The Ayush services sector has demonstrated robust growth momentum, with its economic contribution estimated at $36.92 billion in 2024-25 and forecasts suggesting expansion to between $216 billion and $318 billion by 2047, research by the RIS indicates. The sector has maintained a compound annual growth rate of 16.91 per cent since 2022-23, positioning it among India's most dynamic service industries.
The sector's expansion has translated into tangible employment gains, directly supporting 1.76 million livelihoods across India. Additionally, the traditional medicine and wellness sector generated $1.77 billion in medical value travel revenue during 2024-25, reflecting growing international demand for India's heritage health systems.
The findings were presented during the 11th National Ayurveda Day celebrations held in Nagpur on September 23. Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav said the research underscores the sector's economic significance beyond its cultural roots. "These findings demonstrate that Ayush represents far more than a cultural heritage—it is a dynamic, high-growth economic engine driving India's service sector expansion," he stated.
The research, conducted by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), provides comprehensive analysis of the sector's economic footprint and growth trajectory, offering policymakers and industry stakeholders data-driven insights for future development strategies.
