India's Bangladesh envoy discusses bilateral ties amid political tensions

High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday for discussions focused on economic cooperation and joint development initiatives between the two nations, the Indian High Commission said.

The diplomatic engagement comes at a delicate moment in India-Bangladesh relations, with tensions surfacing over Dhaka's demand for the extradition of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following political upheaval. Questions also linger about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's planned visit to India next month to attend the BRICS Summit, amid uncertainty over whether the trip will proceed as scheduled.

During the meeting, Trivedi presented Chowdhury with a copy of the 'Arthashastra,' the ancient Indian treatise on statecraft and economics attributed to Kautilya. The Indian mission highlighted a passage from the text emphasizing the value of education, stating that "an educated person is respected everywhere."

The High Commissioner's visit underscores New Delhi's efforts to maintain diplomatic channels with Dhaka despite the recent strains in bilateral relations. Both nations share significant economic and strategic interests, particularly in regional infrastructure projects and trade partnerships.
