India's Cabinet panel charts departmental strategy for El Niño drought crisis

India's Cabinet Sub-Committee has initiated work on a comprehensive, inter-departmental strategy to address drought conditions exacerbated by El Niño phenomena, according to government sources. The move signals an effort to coordinate response mechanisms across multiple administrative and sectoral agencies to ensure effective drought mitigation.

Provisional drought assessments have identified 358 mandals—administrative divisions primarily in southern and eastern states—as drought-affected areas. The identification process relied on key indicators including rainfall patterns and crop coverage metrics, establishing a preliminary baseline for intervention planning.

The departmental approach aims to integrate strategies across agriculture, water resources, rural development, and disaster management portfolios. By coordinating efforts across these sectors, authorities seek to ensure targeted relief measures and long-term resilience-building initiatives reach affected communities systematically.

El Niño weather patterns have historically contributed to irregular monsoon behavior across South Asia, frequently resulting in below-normal rainfall and agricultural stress. The Cabinet Sub-Committee's action plan is expected to provide a framework for both immediate relief and medium-term drought management strategies tailored to regional conditions and resource availability.
