India's captive, commercial coal output surges 42% in October

India's captive and commercial coal mining sector demonstrated robust growth in October, with production climbing to 22.03 million tonnes, signalling a significant acceleration in the country's domestic coal output. The surge reflects continued expansion of non-public coal extraction channels as India seeks to reduce dependence on imports and bolster energy security.

Coal dispatches from captive and commercial mines totalled 21.11 million tonnes in October, representing a 36% year-on-year jump. This substantial growth underscores the operational momentum in India's private and captive mining operations, which have increasingly supplemented output from state-run Coal India Limited.

Over the first seven months of the fiscal year ending October, cumulative production from captive and commercial mines reached 117.23 million tonnes, up 11.3% compared with the same period in the previous financial year. The steady performance through April-October indicates that the growth trajectory is being sustained across the mining calendar.

The expansion of captive and commercial coal production assumes particular significance amid India's escalating energy demands and its commitment to ramping up domestic mining capacity. These operations, which supply coal directly to power plants and industrial consumers, have proven instrumental in narrowing supply-demand gaps and supporting the nation's power generation infrastructure.
